My favorite high school class turned out to be wood shop. The teacher taught basic woodturning and stressed safety by showing us his missing finger! My father also enjoyed working with wood as a hobby and let me use his home-built lathe on occasion.

After retirement in 2002, with encouragement and help from family and friends, I renewed my passion for turning wood and set up a shop in my basement. I now spend 5 to 7 hours a day trying new techniques and designs. Most of my pieces are designed to be "functional" artwork. In other words, I want them to be used and enjoyed.

Color, grain and natural imperfections that mar each piece of wood add interesting features and I enjoy trying to create something special and unique. The finish is an important step for me. Any type of gloss finish on wood magnifies imperfections, so tool or sanding marks are not permitted. Of course, not every idea I come up with is successful, but the challenge is always worth the extra effort.

In June, 2006 I was judged to receive the 1st Place award at the 2006 Capitol Expo, Frankfort, KY. Also in June, I was honored to assist professional turners Nick Cook and Bonnie Klein who were teaching children basic woodturning skills at the 2006 AAW Symposium held in Louisville, KY.

I am currently a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Louisville Artisans Guild and am a member of the American Association of Woodturners, Louisville Area Woodturners, KYANA Woodcrafters, Inc., and the Oldham County Art Association. Pieces of my work are on display at the Chestnut Tree Gallery in Richmond, KY.
