Marianne has been working in clay full time for over 12 years. Her fascination with clay and the vessel is ongoing. Most of her work is thrown on the wheel, and though traditional in form the finished pieces have a contemporary look to them because the way they are decorated while the clay is still soft. Almost every piece is decorated with texture made by a stamp that Marianne made with the same clay. Some of the decorative motifs in her stamps have been drawn from multi-ethnic sources. For example, two interlocking circles is an oriental symbol showing there is no beginning and no end. Another is a Mayan symbol for the calendar which is a circle divided into 8 sections and 4 of them marked signifying the seasons or the equinoxes and solstices. Others still are simplified shapes found in architecture or nature. Marianne finishes her work with her own glazes, all of which are lead free. All of her work is fired to cone 7 (2210F.), in a 33 cubic foot kiln she built next to the studio. Her work covers a large price range and is dishwasher and oven safe. |
