Basketmaker Terry Cornett is a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Kentucky Craft Marketing Program. Terry studied basket weaving at the John C. Campbell Folkschool under Martha Wetherbee, the renowned Shaker basket maker.
Her Shaker-style baskets are woven from premium quality brown ash. The brown ash tree combines the strength, flexibility and beauty that makes it the preferred material of basket weavers for fine wood splint baskets that will last for generations.
Like the Shakers, Terry weaves her baskets over a wooden mold to get the perfectly symmetrical shapes that the Shakers desired. Handles, made of cherry, ash or oak are prepared so that they can be carefully placed between the weavers at just the right height. Inside and outside rims are lashed to the basket completing a traditional Shaker fancy basket, an icon of American Design.
