Jan has resided in five different states in her life. She was born in Fond du Lac, WI. In 1964 her family moved to Louisville, Kentucky. After marrying her husband Steve in 1974, they have lived in Lexington and Paducah, Kentucky, Texas, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire before returning to central Kentucky. Jan observed and has been influenced by quilts in each area, where they lived. All of these states had its own unique designs and fabrics incorporated into their quilts. Pennsylvania was the beginning of her quilting career in 1988, when she dragged one of her new neighbors to their first quilting class. Jan sold her first work in Wolfeboro, NH the oldest resort town in the United States. She began designing wall hangings from traditional patterns and then began creating her own designs as a full time job. Jan does not have a formal education in art. She has gained her knowledge through reading and attending classes and many quilt shows. She enjoys the challenge of working with a wide spectrum of colors and designs through commissioned pieces. Jan's work is inspired by patterns that create movement, depth, and illusion. Jan is a juried member of the KY Crafted Program and the KY guild of Artists and Craftsmen. She has taught classes at quilt shops, quilt guilds and through her local extension office in Taylorsville. Jans work has been exhibited and purchased at the Governors Mansion through the Kentucky visions program; Gallery for the Arts in Mt Sterling, Ky.; Artisans Coffee Café in Louisville; The Opera House Lexington, the Yeiser Art Center Paducah, KY; Carnegie Hall in Cincinnati, OH., and at shows such as St. James Art Show. Through the Hoffman Fabric Challenge she had an original designed piece traveling the United States and Canada in 2005. A longarm quilting machine is Jans most recent purchase and endeavor. It has broadened the possibilities for quilting her larger commission pieces. She is also accepting work from other quilters, which offers a new challenge of helping others complete there works of art with machine quilting. Jan can be contacted by email: jdquilter@insightbb.com . Working with people on commission pieces from other states is never a problem. We have email, the phone and snail mail to send fabric samples! |
