Deborah K. Willoughby
Natural Materials
email

Hello!  My name is Debra K. (Deb) Willoughby and I am a native Kentuckian artisan.

The cornshuck art I make is uniquely of my own design and the result of twenty plus years of working with this natural medium. The dolls I create are all faceless, ‘to keep them from becoming vain’ as told in the Native American legend of the faceless doll. Each doll comes with a copy of this legend.

Corn shuck doll-making is one of the oldest known forms of folk art. In Native American cultures, toys were made from raw materials that were available in nature. This art form was later taught to the people of Appalachia. Over time, the primitive corn shuck doll has evolved into the shaped character dolls made today. It is very important to me to make my corn shuck dolls as close to the way they were originally made, using all natural materials.

The dolls range in size from the 8” pilgrim doll designed for Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, the 10” angel doll, to the 24” tree topper angel, ornament angels and bookmark angels available during the Christmas season.

My art is made available through ‘Seven Sisters Artisans’ and can be found at the gift shop in Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg Ky., or at the Gallery, which is located in the Old Town Artist Village in Berea, Kentucky. Custom orders are accepted by email at: sevensisters09@yahoo.com .
