"I have spent hundreds of hours in the woods, often sitting in a treestand taking in all God has provided. Nature has provided an abundance of inspiration for artistic expression - the curves, the subtle textures - all of this provides inspiration for my turnings." John Keeton grew up in a rural setting in Floyd County, Kentucky, and spent most of his free time in the woods of the eastern part of the state. He graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1973 and he has been an attorney in Winchester since 1975. While planning to build a walnut table in the fall of 2009, John decided to buy an inexpensive lathe in order to turn the legs for the table. That set of table legs opened a new world for John. He turned his first bowl on Christmas Eve, 2009, and never looked back! He does hope to eventually be able to balance his woodturning and flatwork, but for now, woodturning is such a jealous mistress!! “I escape into the world of woodworking, whether it is flatwork or turning. However, the precision required in flatwork stands in contrast to the freedom of woodturning. Cutting a board too short while building a table means you cut another board. A wrong cut while woodturning often means just another design opportunity! It is creativity unleashed.” John is a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the Bluegrass Area Woodturners, an invited member of the World of Woodturners, exhibiting juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists & Craftsmen, and participates in various Internet woodturning forums. His woodturning interests include many forms, but lean heavily toward lidded vessels with delicate finials and stem work, combining the somewhat different techniques of spindle turning and vessel turning. Along with woodworking, John enjoys the solitude of the outdoors and hunting. Artistic endeavours run in the family, as his wife Eileen is heavily involved in quilting, sewing and a multitude of other crafts that she enjoys. John and Eileen have 13 grandchildren that take up the rest of their time! |
