Natural Materials

My work with florals began four years ago when I decorated teacups with silk flowers. My son's fiance, Ibett, who is a florist, taught me the mechanics of floral arranging. Eventually,I got interested in the use of natural materials for decorating the teacups. In 2009, it was suggested that I use gourds as bases for my arrangements. Preparing the gourds is an interesting process. Each gourd must be cleaned on the outside and inside surface. I use a small saw to make an opening in the gourd. Then I insert floral foam and moss. The florals are attached with pics and glue. Each gourd is unique and provides endless opportunities for creativity. For years I have picked up seedpods, shells, rocks and feathers. Now I can use these treasures to artfully recycle the beauty of nature. Some of the filiowers and herbs I use are grown in my yard. They include strawflowers, marigolds, yarrow, lavender, rosemary and rue. I have learned how to air dry and use glycerin and silicone to preserve flowers and herbs. It is my plan to raise gourds in the future. Last year I took pottery classes and have been making hand thrown containers for my floral projects. This year I became a juried member of Sheltowee Artisans and the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen. I feel very honored to be a part of each guild. |
