Wood

I am a retired financial analyst who started woodworking more than thirty years ago. When my first child was born, I wanted to give her something personal, so I made her a toy box and bedroom furniture. That project spawned a love of woodworking that continues to this day. I work with both Native American and exotic hardwoods. I design my clocks, boxes, bowls, and custom furniture to take advantage of the burls, spaltings, and other figurings in the wood grain. I specialize in wood laminations. I like the way thevarious colored wood grains contrast with the clean lines of my designs. I use an oil finish to enhance, but not overpower, the wood. For over twenty-five years, I have exhibited at juried craft shows, include Penrod Art Fair in Indianapolis, Madison Chautauqua in Indiana, the Summer and Fall shows at Berea, Kentucky, and the Lexington (KY) Art League Fair, among others. My work has been on display at the Columbus Gallery Gift Shop of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea, as well as other local galleries. I am a juried member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Kentucky Crafted Program I think preserving the art of woodworking through education and conservation is important. I have written several articles that were published in Popular Woodworking, a national woodworking magazine, and teach at the John Campbell Folk School in North Carolina and Woodcraft. To replace the wood I use, I have planted 10,000 walnut trees on my tree farm. I hope my actions enable future generations to enjoy woodworking. |
